That’s right, Canada had a Wild West, too! And the job of maintaining order fell to the North West Mounted Police—the predecessor of the Royal Canadian Mounties we know today.
The original Mounties patrolled the vast northwest range, protecting the gold fields from marauders and settlers from Indian raids, and putting down insurrections like the North West Rebellion of 1885. Along the way they encountered every manner of wildlife, from buffalo to elk to brown bear. The Mountie needed a sturdy, reliable gun that packed a punch, and the Winchester 1876 .45-75 was the tool for the job.
In total, the Mounties purchased only 1600 of these carbines, and today an original 1876 NWMP is as rare as a hot day in Saskatchewan. The next best thing? A finely crafted Chapparal replica. Every detail has been lovingly reproduced, from the saddle ring to the Spanish meter rear sight, to the NWMP brand on the stock. You don’t have to be Canadian to appreciate this little piece of history!
